If you find yourself with the same list of New Year's resolutions year after year - lose weight, save more money, start meditating - then you know deep down you're bound to fail. So, this year, 2022, is a good time to rethink your approach.
Starting fresh and looking forward to new opportunities does not mean we need to be pressured into setting big resolutions. Instead, it is important to keep our feet on the ground and take a step back before making any unrealistic expectations for ourselves as it can affect our mental health.
Some of these unrealistic goals gravitate around unattainable weight loss, these include: stop eating sugar, quit drinking alcoholic drinks, and other diet changes that deprive the body of pleasure and often backfire into some nasty cravings.
Instead, you start making healthier decisions, keeping a balanced diet and rewarding yourself occasionally with your favourite sweets.
Gyms make a healthy profit from new memberships in January that go unused later in the year. Joining a gym and paying for a membership is fairly easy to keep, however, going to the gym every day is unrealistic as other plans can get in the way and can get you easily off track.
Instead, choose an activity that you can easily integrate into your daily life, like biking to work or exercising in the morning before you go to work. Get some type of fitness equipment like a jump rope or dumbbell to get a good and more efficient home workout.
Losing weight is one of the most popular new year's resolutions. When you focus more on the outcome - obsessing over the number on the scale, and not the journey, it can lead to unhealthy situations like crash diets or depression when you're unable to meet the goal. This can make your fitness journey very difficult and less enjoyable.
Instead, focus on something you can better control like cutting down sugar or processed food and keeping an eye on your diet without starving yourself. It is also worth buying your own gym equipment since those who do tend to stick with their exercise plans longer than those who simply purchase gym memberships.
Or you can do both (home gym and gym membership) so you can mix things up especially when you want a wider variety of exercise equipment found in the gym to get a complete, full-body workout and at the same time sneak in some exercise at work with portable workout equipment. Both have advantages and will depend on your preference and budget.
Making new year's resolutions may just be a bad idea when done the wrong way. The key to success is to always remember to be kind to yourself and take your new year's resolution one day at a time with a solid and attainable plan. Moreover, if there's a goal that you really want to achieve, don't wait for the new year and simply start making plans for it.
