Although there are tons of advantages to a gym membership, having your own gym is convenient and saves you money. With just a few weight training equipment and workout items, you can set up your own (and very effective) home gym.
Today we're giving you tips on the basic fitness equipment you'll need to do your weight training work out at home.
Having your own home gym offers some advantages that you shouldn't overlook. For example, your weight bench will never be occupied and if you find traces of sweat then you're a hundred percent sure it's yours. Weight training at home also means that you won't have to put up with those who monopolise the mirror posing and taking selfies, right where you want to make lateral shoulder shrugs.
You will save on the monthly fee and avoid the headache of looking for a parking spot. Best of all, you won't have to miss a workout on days when leaving the house becomes impossible because of the awful weather.
It might seem unimportant but having a home gym also means you get to choose your own music or none at all, especially if you're the type to focus fully in your workout routines.
You don't need much to set up your own gym. With just four devices you can equip your own muscle training room to train your whole body effectively.
Here you have the four basics with which you can train effectively in your home gym. In addition, you can expand this basic equipment and it can help you achieve any training objective. It doesn't matter if you want to improve your stamina or develop your muscles, lose weight or increase your maximum strength.
For the basic equipment of your private gym, we recommend a pair of dumbbells. Choose weights that you can enlarge with weight discs. Different weight training exercises may require different types of weights. Just as 5kg may be enough for certain exercises, you may need 20 kg for others. You should also not forget that you will be making progress in your training. This way you can always buy weight discs afterward.
Dumbbells, unlike long bars, offer more variety and are more versatile. And they don't take up as much space in your own gym. You can always buy a long bar later, but to begin with, we recommend dumbbells.
Your strength training at home needs two fundamentals: a plan and a weight bank. The weight bench is simply a safe base for many exercises in your gym, e.g. bench press. But it's not just for lying down. You can also use it to do dips for so-called "Bulgarian squats". This is a lunge, in which the foot that is furthest behind rests on the bench. This increases the degree of difficulty and effectiveness.
If you want to buy a weight bench for your training room, pay attention to two things in particular: maximum load and adjustability. If the backrest can be adjusted, you will be able to do more exercises. Each time you change the angle in an exercise, you'll also train your muscles a little differently. This variety is one of the most important parts of successful weight lifting at home.
And by "hanging" we mean literally. You'll need a dominated bar. Rowing with dumbbells is an excellent exercise for the back. But your lumbar training will be even more effective if you combine it with domed rowing.
With the dominated ones you can develop a really strong back. Also with a dominated bar, you can do one of the best exercises for the abdomen in your training room: lifting knees or legs. Grabbing you will also train your grip strength, one of the most underrated types of body strength. Raising your legs will train your abdominal muscles.
As far as dominated bars are concerned, three main variants can be differentiated in a general way. If you only have a very small space, you can get a door bar; if you have a free (and resistant) wall, we certainly recommend a dominated bar to install on the wall of your training room.
You will be able to place it at a variable height, withstand a greater load and you can also use it to anchor a sling trainer, for example. For the third variant, you need a little more space. These are known as the Power Tower, which usually offers different types of dominadas, a dips station, and an integrated leg lifter.
Your own training room will be like your little kingdom. Here you can do and undo whatever you want. However, we recommend that you keep a gym rack where you can store your dumbbells, weight discs, medicine balls or training mat, easily and saving space between sessions.
With this basic equipment for your home gym, you will be able to carry out a complete training of practically all muscles. Now your exercise room only needs one last polish. Your workout will be especially effective whenever you take on new challenges. And by this we don't mean "plug me in another disc", but a wider range of exercises. With a few fitness equipment, you can introduce a wide variety of exercises on different parts of your muscles.
Instead of dumbbell bench presses, from time to time you can choose to do push-ups with a medicine ball. And last but not least, your equipment must include the fitness equipment par excellence of recent years. We are referring to those hard foam rollers, known as myofascial rollers.
You already know the basic weight training equipment you need for a home gym. But you may also want to do a cardio workout. With strength training alone, you can burn body fat. However, it is ideal to combine your weight training at home with cardio training.
Nowadays we can find a great variety of products to mount our gym at home. Manufacturers of home fitness equipment are increasingly betting on making machines and weight machines more compact, smaller in size and with the possibility of doing a greater number of exercises. In addition, technology is advancing and more and more we can find better strength equipment accessories and products with more competitive prices.
Once you know the measurements of the room where you want to set up your gym and a budget, you can start looking for weight training equipment that helps you reach your goal without compromising comfort and space.
To choose which type of machine or gym equipment most suitable for your home, first select three or four models. Then make a comparison and note the pros and cons of each item. Be very clear about the basic functions you need the gym to complete your exercise routines.
Among a few considerations to help you purchase your training equipment including the dimension, the weight it can bear, variety and quality of executions one can carry out using the equipment, and the price. However, we recommend giving priority to free weight exercises done with your own body, with bars and dumbbells.
If we have space and our budget is not a problem, I would opt in the first place, for the purchase of a bodybuilding cage or a strength rack, as the most important piece within our gym at home. Also, another of the fundamental devices for our project would be a pulley or cable with several workstations. With these two apparatuses, we can make the majority of basic exercises with which to be able to develop all our muscles of the body and in addition working with different types of tension.
We will also have to buy bodybuilding equipment that allows us to expand our range of exercises and its variants, such as an adjustable weight bench, bars of different lengths, discs, and dumbbells. The latter if we want to optimize the space my recommendation without a doubt, is that you buy adjustable dumbbells with weight selector. Not only for space they save us, but it also allows us more dynamic training and helps us to have our gym tidier.
Nor can we forget about simpler bodybuilding accessories, these help us complement our training, giving a different approach to the way we train our muscles. For example, the straps for training in suspension, bands of resistance, abdominal wheels or pulleys will allow you to give a different approach to routines, extending and improving the variety of exercises.
In order for us to be able to consider that we have a complete gym at home, we must be able to train our whole body correctly and effectively. It is for this reason that we must be able to do the following exercises:
Consequently, it is important that the machines, equipment, and gym accessories that we buy have the appropriate work stations to carry out these exercises correctly and safely. Also to help us work from different angles so we can recruit more fibres in the exercise.
An example is a multi-position bench, with which we can execute different variants of the press bench and do it both with the back declined and inclined. In this way, we will attack the pectoral from on all points getting better muscle development. In the same way, we can apply many exercises both shoulder, dorsal, trapezius, biceps or triceps.
For this reason, buying a power cage is also a great investment when building a home gym. Apart from being a good option allows us to do all the exercises essential to train our body safely. Without a doubt, if we get one and add a good adjustable bench, a long bar, discs and dumbbells and other combinations of gym equipment, we will have a gym capable of fully meeting our expectations.
